Freshman Hannah Turlington won the Greater Western Ohio Conference cross country championship Saturday with a 22-second margin of victory.
Her outstanding race earned Turlington the Female Runner of the Year award in the GWOC. She was also named to the All-Conference First Team.
Turlington crossed the finish line in 18 minutes, 37 seconds (18:37), a full 22 seconds ahead of second place runner Audrey Holbrook of Beavercreek.
"Hannah ran an outstanding race, breaking away from the lead pack at about one and three-quarter miles and continuing on for a 22 second victory," said Northmont Coach Jack Lintz.
Another freshman, Kerry Strader, improved her best time of the year by 28 seconds to finish in 20:46 in 41st place overall. Becca Fahringer followed at 21:26 in 55th place, and Libby Aring in 21:36 in 61st place - both running their best races of the season.
Rounding out the effort was Megan Lynch, who also ran her best time of the year at 22:21 to finish 78th overall.
Strader earned Second Team All-Conference honors along with Fahringer while Aring earned Special Mention.
The Northmont girls team placed ninth overall in the 14 team field and third overall in the North Division.
On the boys side, Jake Schaurer and Sam Greer both finished in under 17 minutes, which had been a barrier for both runners most of the year.
Schaurer finished in 16:47 for 12th place overall while Greer came in at 16:59 for 21st place.
"Jake had gone under 17 minutes only once before and this was Sam's initial time under 17 minutes. Both of them ran outstanding races," Lintz said.
Senior Nick Williams finished 27th overall in 17:13, sophomore Chris Lindsey placed 42nd in 17:41 and sophomore Shaun Kramer placed 53rd in 18:10.
"Nick Williams rebounded from a sub-par race two weeks ago at St. X to run, by far, his best race of 2006," Lintz commented. "Chris Lindsey once again moved up throughout the race to finish solidly for us. Shaun Kramer ran the type of race that I've been waiting on from him all season. He ran a nice personal record and really came through when we needed him. He is a big key to our team."
Schaurer was named to the All-Conferecne First Team while Greer, Williams and Lindsey made Second Team and Kramer earned Special Mention.
The boys team placed sixth overall and 2nd in the North Division.
Other Northmont runners that competed included Diana Hsieh (23:05), Melissa Hammond (23:40), Carly Pike (25:34), Collin Horstman (18:35), Jimmy Fritchman (18:40), Mike Sandlin (18:51), Coby Bohman (19:49), and Matt Hey (20:32).
