Christopher Tyler earns Eagle Award
Christopher Tyler, son of Kathy and Charlie Tyler of Northglen Court in Englewood, has earned the highest award the Boy Scouts of America offers to its Scouts, the Eagle Award.
Chris was recognized in ceremonies on Nov. 16 at the Happy Corner Church. Among the highlights of the evening were the presentation of the Eagle award and a slide show on Chris's career in Scouting.
A member of Troop 325, which is sponsored by the Northmont Rotary Club, Chris Tyler is one of about two percent of all Boy Scouts who attain the Eagle rank. The Eagle Award requires earning 21 merit badges, serving in various leadership capacities in the troop, and planning, organizing, and directing projects of assistance to the community.
For his Eagle service project, Chris renovated a quarter-mile walking track behind Demmitt Elementary in Vandalia. This included recycling the former rubber mulch, replacing underlay with gravel before having asphalt applied. Then the recycled rubber was used to trim the new asphalt track. Tyler made presentations to various civic groups and businesses to get funding for the project and organized several volunteers and professionals in the completion of the 250-hour project.
During his three years in Scouts, Tyler, 15, served as troop historian, assistant patrol leader and den chief. He attended a year of summer camp at Camp Falling Rock and two years at Chief Logan Reservation. He also participated in a high adventure trip: hiking from southern Ohio to the New York State line for 662 miles while taking camping, kayaking, and tourism breaks. Currently he is planning on attending Sea Base, a water adventure in the Florida Keys and is still active with his troop participating in weekly meeting and monthly camping trips.
As a student in the Northmont City School District, Chris Tyler, who is a straight-A student, has received two Presidential Awards for academic excellence, was awarded the "Live Strong - Every Second Counts" award, was a member of the Northmont freshman football team and is currently a member of the freshman basketball team.
