Englewood man charged with theft of motor vehicles
Victim's investigative work helps police make arrest

A pair of dirt bikes stolen off a trailer in the 1000 block of Terracewood Drive were recovered Wednesday by Englewood Police after a search warrant was executed at 1015 Taywood Road.

Jordan Grant, 18, was charged with two counts of theft of a motor vehicle and transported to the Montgomery County Jail.

According to Englewood Police Sgt., Mike Lang, the arrest and recovery of the stolen property came about as the result of some good investigative work by the victim, Thomas L. McDougall, Jr., of Ramona, CA.

McDougall, who was in the process of moving from California to New Hampshire, left a trailer containing three motorcycles at his sister's residence on Terracewood. Sometime overnight on March 6-7 two of the three motorcycles were stolen. Police had on leads in the case.

However, McDougall decided to check Craig's List to see if his two stolen motorcycles might be listed for sale. Indeed, he discovered a listing and began text messaging the seller. He requested photos of the motorcycles, a black and white 2001 Honda CR-125 dirt bike and blue and white 2006 Yamaha TTR-125. Digital photos of the two bikes were sent to McDougall via e-mail. He recognized distinguishing features such as the remnants of tie-down straps still dangling off the bikes, and a California emission sticker.

He then contacted Englewood Police. Detective Dave Collins subpoenaed the seller's cell phone records and identified Grant as the account holder. Police obtained a search warrant, which was executed at 3 p.m. Wednesday, March 10. The stolen motorcycles were discovered in the garage and removed from the property.

"This was a great case involving an empowered victim and a determined detective," said Sgt. Lang. "Thanks to the work of Det. Collins and the victim, this case had a quick and successful resolution."
