A Union man is facing several felony charges following a nearly 3-hour standoff Saturday morning in the 800 block of Nordhoff Farm Road.
According to Det. Steve Watern, a 9-1-1 call was received at 6:32 a.m. Saturday regarding a man with a gun threatening to kill everyone inside a residence at 820 Nordhoff Farm Road.
Police learned that Steven J. Carver, 30, was inside the residence holding his wife and 5-year-old son hostage.
A perimeter was set-up around the home. Carver's father initially told police that his son was armed with an AK-47 assault rifle. That information generated a SWAT agency call-out, according to Watern. Prior to Watern's arrival at the crime scene, Carver's wife was able to escape out the back door of the residence along with her 5-year-old son.
After a 90-minute discussion with a hostage negotiation team, Carver, who was wearing a bulletproof vest, surrendered to SWAT personnel.
Carver was charged with two counts of kidnapping with a weapons and bulletproof vest specifications, child endangering and inducing panic, which is a felony. Watern said the SWAT agency call-out cost the city a large sum of money.
"This case was resolved successfully because the operation was run in a textbook manner. Everybody did what they were supposed to do and everyone got to go home, except the suspect," Watern said.
