Doug Lantz, a 1985 Centerville High School graduate and ABC News freelance journalist, interviews Jessica Lopez from the Centerville High School color guard during the filming of Lantz’s documentary, “From the 50 Yard Line.”

The Centerville High School Jazz Band and Color Guard is one of the featured bands in the upcoming documentary, From the 50 Yard Line, created and produced by 1985 CHS graduate Doug Lantz, an ABC News freelance journalist.

On Wednesday, December 20, band and color guard students viewed a 15-minute trailer of the new film, which just wrapped up production in November. The film, which is still being edited, will hit film festivals next summer. Lantz hopes to have it gain success like the film Supersize Me, and have it distributed to the masses later in the year.

Lantz and his Los Angeles film crew, Blake House Media, Inc., followed band and color members for eight months this past year, from auditions and band camp, to the marching season and to the national competition where Centerville placed 13th in the nation.

Lantz followed a number of students, including sophomore tenor player Marcus Sinewe, who was profiled during a group discussion in the film. Sinewe said he's excited to see the final product, and hopes it will change people's opinions of high school marching bands.

Sinewe, who has plans to become a surgeon, said joining the Centerville Jazz Band was probably the best thing he's ever done in his life.

Lantz is also hoping his film will change people's perception of high school marching bands.

"The band experience especially at Centerville is about the pursuit of excellence, regardless of trophies, that you're putting your best foot forward," said Lantz.

Centerville band director Andrew Markworth said he hopes the film will show people how hard kids work.

Deputy Mayor Doug Cline, who was on hand for the event, encouraged people to see the film. He said the Jazz Band has always been a source of pride in the community.
