Twenty Greater Dayton Region Kroger stores are conducting a "Crayons 4 Classrooms" school supply drive. Collection barrels located in these stores encourage customers to donate school supplies that will be used to help stock the Crayons to Classrooms teacher free store. The drive will conclude on Sunday, August 31. In addition, The Kroger Company has donated store display shelves, lighting fixtures, shopping carts, and contributed more than $10,000 to DC2C the past two years.
The Dayton Foundation and the Mathile Family Foundation launched Crayons to Classrooms in early 2008 as a community initiative to provide free educational supplies, such as paper, pencils and notebooks, to qualifying teachers for students in need. To participate, teachers must be from schools that are pre-registered with DC2C, the criterion being that at least 70 percent of the school's students participate in the National School Lunch Program. In the Greater Dayton Region, there are approximately 85 schools and 1,400 teachers, who are serving the educational needs of 23,000 children who qualify. Since opening their doors January 15, 2009, DC2C has hosted 15 school visits and served a total of 174 Dayton area teachers from eight schools that together are responsible for educating 3,555 children.
The following Kroger stores in our area are participating: Alex-Bell Kroger, 2917 W. Alex-Bell Road, Centerville; Centerville Kroger, 1023 S. Main Street, Centerville; Dorothy Lane Kroger, 2115 E.
