Monday, Dec. 22, about 9 a.m. as Discount Drug Mart at 240 W. Central Ave. opened, a white male, who stood about five-foot eight-inches tall, complete with goatee, Ohio State baseball cap and blue jacket, asked to see a pharmacist. After being asked to sit on a bench, the 30-ish male became agitated and handed workers a robbery note. Soon two female employees were injured from being knocked down, as he ran out the back door with several bottles of Percocet (Oxycodone and Acetaminophen) and Oxycontin, a highly addictive painkiller, he had just obtained. The alarm was sounding.
Floor Manager Todd Dalton tried to get the license plate number of the small white Audi-type four door get-away car as the robber fired two shots at him with a 9mm gun. The man then drove north on Renwood Place as Dalton locked up the store and got all employees into the office behind a bullet-proof door.
The Warren County Drug Task Force commander, John Burke, explained most robbers who target pharmacies are typically not looking to resell drugs, but are addicts who need a fix. Oxycontin is what robbers seek in about 70 percent of pharmacy robberies.
