About seventy very close friends, concerned citizens and local military members came to participate in the dedication of a metal bench for SSgt.Travis Griffin USAF at North Park Friday, April 3 at 2 p.m. Griffin was killed while on duty in Baghdad a year ago, just 15 days shy of his return for leave. He is buried in Springboro Cemetery.
A group of Dayton Christian High School students sang various patriotic songs during the extensive ceremony. Pastor Bruce Moore from Clear Creek Christian Assembly, the church where Chris Herwick, Travis’ mother, is a secretary, gave a prayer and memorial. The Patriot Guard came and stood with flags behind the ceremony spot under the trees on the walking path. Three military members with their guard dogs came to honor Travis, who once worked as a dog handler. The Springboro Optimists placed flags at the entrance to the park. Members of Travis’ unit came from all over the United States to honor their friend. Many had not been able to attend the funeral, as they were still on active duty in Baghdad.
Pastor Moore referenced a famous general who said, “The legitimate object of war is a more perfect peace.” Pastor Moore also quoted former President Bush when he said, “Prayer is the greatest gift that we can give anyone.” Moore added, “Remember how fleeting life can be,” and said, “God gave us tears to process our grief.” Pastor Moore thanked all those who served at all times, through all years, and ended with, “Yes, yes, yes, yes… God Bless America.”
The Army medic who served in the squad with Travis explained that being in a military unit is like having a different family. He added Travis could find the fun in any situation.
