Summer reading program slated
Children in grades K-12 can join the summer reading program at the Greene County Public Library to learn about “Paws, Claws, Scales and Tales.” Participants will enjoy stories, games, crafts and more. Registration continues throughout the summer. The summer reading program is designed to encourage reading throughout the season. Studies have shown that reading during the summer months has a positive impact on children’s reading skills during the next school year. Incentives, including a coupon for free books, will be awarded to participants. The calendar of events is as follows: PRESCHOOL STORY TIMES Select one three-week session only. Location: library • Session one: June 14 to 29; • Session two: July 12 to 27. • Ages three and four: Thursdays, 10:30 to 11 a.m. July 27 will feature Green County Parks’ “Wild about Wildlife” program on what to do when you find an orphan animal. • Ages four through six: Wednesdays, 1 to 1:30 p.m. June 28 will feature Greene County Parks’ “Wild about Wildlife” program on what to do when you find an orphan animal. SATURDAY STORY TIMES For ages three through seven, 11 a.m., no registration required. • June 17: Parcel of Pets: Pets from Jack’s Aquarium will visit. • July 15: Meet Blue the Therapy Dog and hear dog stories. • Aug. 12: Imaginary Pets: Bring your stuffed animal for the poet show. FAMILY PROGRAMS For ages four and older and parents, Mondays at 7 p.m. at the Beavercreek Community Library. • July 31: Outreach for Animals with Tim Harrison, registration begins July 24. BOOK BUDDIES DISCUSSION GROUP Thursdays, July 11 to Aug. 1 from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. • July 11: “Catwings series by Ursula Le Guin, registration begins June 26. • July 18: “Animal Ark” series by Ben Baglio, registration begins July 11. • July 25 “World According to Humphrey” by Betty Birney, registration begins July 18. • Aug. 1: group choice to be announced, registration begins July 25. SPECIAL PROGRAMS Appropriate for ages four to 12, unless otherwise noted. An adult must accompany children under six years of age. • PT Reptiles: Thursday, June 8 at 1:30 p.m., Peace Lutheran Church, 3530 Dayton-Xenia Road, for age four to young adult, meet Peter Rushton’s amazing reptiles. • Pet Parade Puppet Shows: Saturday, June 10 at 11 a.m., registration begins June 2; Thursday Aug. 3 at 11 a.m., registration begins July 27 at the Beavercreek Community Library, Several skits about pets will be presented. Children will be puppeteers. • Pets T-shirt Decorating and Crafts Day: Thursday, June 15 from 1 to 2:30 p.m., Peace Lutheran Church. Bring a white or light t-shirt to decorate. Pet crafts will also be available. Registration begins June 2. • Decorate the Auto Racing Book Cart: Mondays, June 19 and 26 and and Friday, June 23 from 2 to 4 p.m., for school-age children, library. Come help decorate the book cart race car for Library Day at Kilcare. • Rick Sowash, Storyteller: Tuesday, June 20 at 1:30 p.m., Peace Lutheran Church. Ohio storyteller Rick Sowash will share animal stories. Registration begins June 12. • Dog-gone Good Magic Show: Tuesday, June 27 at 1:30 p.m., Peace Lutheran Church. Magician Jim Kleefeld will share his magical entertainment in this interactive program. Registration begins June 19. • Meet the Turtle Lady: Thursday, July 20 at 10:30 a.m., Peace Lutheran Church. Turtle Lady Nancy Lockard will show her turtles and other reptile friends. Registration begins July 13. • A Summer Reading Club Games Party: Friday, July 28 from 1 to 2:30 p.m., Peace Lutheran Church. Join your friends for lots of game and a take-home surprise bag. Bring a canned good to help the local food pantry. Registration begins July 21. • Readmobile Children’s Book Sale: Friday, July 28 from 12:30 to 3 p.m. Peace Lutheran Church. Bring your coupons to the sale for free books. Visit your local library for a schedule of special programs and to register. The Greene County Public Library system is available on the Internet at www.greenelibrary.info. The library system consists of seven locations: Beavercreek, Jamestown, Cedarville, Fairborn, Yellow Springs, Xenia and Bellbrook.
