Huber Health Center set to add $8 million two-story section with Emergency Department Grandview Medical Center officials have announced plans to create a two-story, 30,000-square-foot addition at the Huber Health Center, 8701 Old Troy Pike. It includes a new freestanding Emergency Department which will occupy the first floor.
"We have seen the need for emergency services there for several years now," said Grandview Medical Center President Richard Haas. "This closer access will be a huge advantage for patients in Huber Heights and surrounding communities. Residents of these areas will have 10 minute access to emergency services, and this is so critical when you have a health crisis."
The $8 million project is expected to be completed by next summer. It will bring, at a minimum, 40 new employees to Huber Health Center. The Emergency Department will benefit from new equipment in the adjoining two-story portion of building which opened in January of this year. This includes CT, X-ray, digital mammography and MRI.
"Huber Heights has needed this level of service in the community for about 10 years now," said Fire Chief Robert Maimone. "Our nearest Emergency Department is about 20 minutes away from most of our service area, and that is just too far. Communities surrounding us will also benefit from quicker emergency access."
Along with 12 treatment rooms, the new facility will have a triage room, an ortho-cast room, respiratory therapy quarters and a complex care room. The Emergency Department (ED) sits on the site of the former urgent care, which was demolished as part of the building renovation. The current Urgent Care Center is now operating within the two-story expansion which opened in January, 2010.
"It is our plan to continue to offer to the community the convenient walk-in healthcare service we have provided at the Huber Health Center for more than two decades," said Nancy Robie, director of business development for Grandview Medical Center System.
There are no plans for inpatient beds at the Huber Health Center. About 14,000 square feet on the top floor of the new addition will be shelled space for future use. This new addition will complete a two-year, three-phase renovation.
Grandview officials anticipate 10-20 percent of the Emergency Department (ED) patients will come from local Emergency Medical Service squads who take their patients to the nearest appropriate ED. About 15,000 total visits are expected in the ED's first year of operations.
"We'll be able to help people with more serious injuries and illnesses with our new ED at Huber Health Center," said Keith Achor, RN, MS, Director of Emergency Services for Grandview Medical Center. "It will be equipped with emergency backup power, so this service will always be available to this community - even in disaster situations."
