MEDWAY - The influential German philosopher Matin Heidegger believed that truth was not always readily discerned. Sometimes truth must be unearthed.
The staff of Aletheia Counseling Center keeps this in mind when they help guide their clients down the road to healing. They have helped people in the local area deal with everything from mild anxiety to sexual abuse and drug addiction.
"Usually people are having a sideways reaction to things," explained Amber Tipton. "It's the lies we believe that fuel our mental problems. We help people to find the hidden truth."
So far, Aletheia's approach to mental health seems to be working. Since it opened its doors on March 3, the center's client load has tripled and two new counselors have been added to the staff.
Professionalism and expertise are behind the growth. Counselors Angelia Dussia, Sandra Konieczny, Gail McNerney, Frank Szymanski, and Barbara Farrell, have educational backgrounds that make them eminently qualified to tackle the issues that rob people of their peace and happiness.
According to counselor and Aletheia proprietor Angelia Dussia, the staff aims to heal, not just treat problems.
"There's not a counselor here who believes that a person should spend their lives in counseling," said Dussia. "We believe a person should have a healthy, balanced life."
To accomplish this goal, the counselors devise a treatment plan for the client and then help the client walk through that plan. The center also helps clients find local support systems in school, church, and local groups.
The approach works with people of all ages and with a wide range of emotions. While the center is built on a Christian foundation, the staff meet people right where they are and do not require clients to subscribe to any particular religious belief.
"We do have clients that are not Christians," said Dussia.
Counseling sessions are offered to individuals, married couples, families, and groups. Play therapy is offered for children who may lack the skills to express their concerns and feelings.
The center is located at 2675 Medway-New Carlisle Road. People can also contact the center at 937-849-1257.
